Faculty Leader

Dr. Thanicha Ruangmas

Dr. Ruangmas is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she leads the Sustainability Analytics FIRE research group since 2019. She received her Ph.D. in Agricultural and Applied Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As a researcher, she is interested in using economics and atmospheric science models to assess the consequences of air pollution regulation.

Dr. Lars Olson

Dr. Olson is Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Maryland, College Park.  He is the founding faculty leader of Sustainability Analytics, the founding director of the cross-campus Global Poverty Minor, served as department chair from 2008-2013 and 2017-2018, and is co-lead faculty fellow on a new University Honors cluster on Information and Power to begin in Fall 2021.  Professor Olson’s research focuses on environmental and natural resource economics, with an emphasis on intertemporal problems under uncertainty. His research has been published in J. Economic Theory, J. Public Economics, J. Environmental Economics and Management, and Environmental and Resource Economics, among others. He has served as Associate Editor and on the Editorial Council of the J. Environmental Economics and Management.

Dr. Jorge Holzer

Dr. Holzer is an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. His research interests are in the fields of natural resource economics, environmental economics and applied microeconomics, with a particular focus on marine resources and the allocation of harvesting rights. His work ranges from the design of market-based mechanisms and conservation auctions to non-market valuation, especially recreational fisheries. He is currently a member of the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC), member of the Chesapeake Bay Program Sustainable Fisheries Goal Implementation Team (GIT), vice-chair and Maryland’s state representative to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Committee on Economics and Social Sciences (CESS), member of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Working Group on Economics and Working Group on Recreational Fisheries Surveys, and an affiliate of Maryland Sea Grant. He currently teaches a Ph.D. level applied microeconomics course, and has previously taught a graduate level natural resource economics course and a multidisciplinary undergraduate course on the Chesapeake Bay.
